John Hess

John Hess moved to Davis in 1977 as an undergrad and has only left for a few years after obtaining his PHD in Genetics. From the student days of cycling as a way to get around, his cycling enthusiasm has grown to include completion of a bicycle frame building class at the UCD Craft Center and large doses of recreational cycling to supplement his utility miles. As his interest in cycling grew, he volunteered to run the Davis Bike Club annual Fall Century (Foxy’s Fall Century, 2005-2008) and then becameMembership director. He was then appointed liaison to the USBHOF and eventually a Board position with the USBHOF. John and his wife Katherine often ride a Steve Rex tandem (local Sacramento frame builder) to nearby restaurants and breweries. John and Katherine have also completed cycling vacations in places such as Mallorca, Quebec, Hawaii and Germany/Austria. John retired from the University in 2016 after 26 years as a research scientist
