Georgena Terry’s decades of work has been in support of women in cycling. A victim of childhood polio, Terry became an avid cyclist in the mid-1970s while working as a stockbroker. She found that most bicycle frames were designed for men and were not ergonomically correct for women. In 1981, she built her first bike frame in her basement and other women began asking her to build frames for them. In 1982, she left her engineering job with Xerox to design and build frames.

Combining her cycling experience and engineering knowledge, Terry began designing frames with dimensions, angles, materials, and components better suited for female cyclists. By 1985, she was building frames exclusively for women, naming her new company Terry Precision Bicycles for Women, the first women-specific cycling company.

Terry introduced women-specific cycling clothing in 1991, and one year later, her Woman’s Sport Saddle made its debut as a more comfortable bike seat for which she received her first patent. In 1997 she introduced the Women’s Liberator saddle.

Team Terry, a professional women’s road racing team, was founded in 2001 with an emphasis on fostering young female cyclists. In 2008, she held the first Wild Goose Chase Women’s Bicycle Tour along Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The ride benefits The Friends of Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge and has raised over $230,000 since its inception. In 2009, Terry sold the controlling interest in Terry Precision Cycles and today designs custom bikes for women.
